The secret of honey grown in Kosai City?

Kosai City, where I live, has one of the longest hours of sunshine in the country☀️

In addition to the long sunshine hours, crops grow vigorously, and many flowers bloom around Lake Hamana.

In addition, the mild climate makes it suitable for growing mandarin oranges, and the cultivation of mandarin oranges, a specialty product, is popular in the mountains.

And while these natural things become sources for certain living things, they also turn into rare foods.

That rare food is honey.

It seems that the amount of honey that one bee can collect in its lifetime is less than one teaspoon. When you hear that, honey seems like a rare food!

So this time, I heard that there are people who are keeping bees in Kosai City, and I actually got to experience collecting honey, so I would like to introduce you to the process.

What is honey grown in Kosai City?

First of all, how is honey made?

First, bees collect sweet nectar from flowers. This nectar taken into the honeybee’s body is rich in sugar.

The bees then return to the hive and pass the nectar stored in their bodies to the worker bees.

In the next step, worker bees store honey in their hive cells. At this time, the key is to add enzymes to the honey stored in the body. This enzyme breaks down the complex sugars in nectar into simple sugars.

The worker bees then spend several days flapping their wings to evaporate the water in the nectar. This concentrates the honey and increases its sugar content. When the water in the nectar decreases and becomes a thick liquid, the honey is ready!

The finished honey is stored in the hive, and the worker bees seal the hive with beeswax.

This protects the honey from outside air and moisture, allowing it to be stored for a long time. The completed honeycomb looks like a delicious treasure chest! (Photo below)

Through this process, bees collect nectar from flowers and convert it into honey, which is stored in the hive. Honey is an important energy source for bees and also serves as a stored food source.

In addition to the bees, which are essential for producing honey, there are other things that are also essential.

That is flower nectar.

The relationship between bees and flowers is like nature’s best couple!

Bees cannot live without flowers, and flowers cannot produce seeds without bees.

First, plants use the magic of photosynthesis to convert the sun’s energy into carbohydrates. Some of it is secreted by the nectary glands as sweet nectar and presented to the bees. Bees use this nectar as a source of nutrition, to fly around, to warm their hives, and as material for nest building. Pollen is also an important delicacy for bees.

Natural pollination occurs when bees visit flowers to collect nectar and pollen, allowing the flowers to produce seeds. In this way, bees and flowers form an inseparable, interdependent relationship. This wonderful partnership plays an important role in supporting the natural ecosystem.

Why do strawberry farmers have bees? ?

In fact, Kosai City is rich in strawberry production, and there are businesses operating strawberry farms within the city.

Bees are hard at work in these strawberry farms.

Why?

In fact, strawberries and bees have a very important relationship in terms of pollination.

Bees collect pollen with their hair while sucking nectar from strawberry flowers. At that time, the pollen attached to the body hair attaches to the tip of the pistil, and pollination occurs. Although it depends on the variety, strawberries alone do not have enough nectar and pollen to sustain a bee colony, so first introduce strawberries with enough nectar and pollen. It is also important that the colony is not too large for the area.

Bees help pollinate strawberries by carrying pollen from flower to flower. This pollination activity ensures that strawberry fruits are well-shaped, uniform in size, and increases yield. Uniform pollination also allows the fruits to mature at the same time, making it easier to time the harvest.

Strawberry farmers adopt beekeeping and set up bee hives to take full advantage of the pollination activity of bees.

Bees not only help with pollination, but also play an important role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.

In this way, the relationship between strawberries and bees is directly linked to the quality and yield of strawberries. Furthermore, maintaining bee health and ecological balance are key to sustainable strawberry cultivation.

Manbee Farm’s beekeeping commitment

01.Honey collection method

Honey bees evaporate water inside the hive and collect only ripe honey with increased sugar content.

We judge the season of cherry blossoms, mandarin oranges, and other natural flowers, collect honey from spring to early summer, and harvest a year’s worth of honey!

02.Production scale and quality

Because bees are kept within reach rather than on a large scale, the production volume varies each year and may be sold out.

Wevalue the deliciousness of nature and offer seasonal flavors of the year!

03.Beekeeping methods

We use stationary beekeeping to manage our bees in a way that does not put a burden on them and is in harmony with nature.

04.Environment and nectar source

Kosai City has a warm climate and abundant nectar sources, making it possible to obtain high-quality honey.

05.Homemade process

We carry out all processes ourselves and remove impurities by hand to preserve the natural taste of our products.

The timing of collecting honey is important. It seems that if you misjudge Taimig, you will not be able to sell it as single-flower nectar (cherry blossoms or mandarin oranges).

Also, beekeeping is often thought of as an old industry, but at Manbee Farm, we learn and put into practice new organic beekeeping techniques from Japan and abroad. In this way, they are constantly searching for ways to protect bees from climate change and foreign predators, maintain healthy bees each year, and collect as much honey as possible.

This time, we had the opportunity to experience harvesting nutritious honey at Manbee Farm!

After that, the separated honey is strained through layers of cloth and packed into containers, and the honey you see in stores is ready!

What types of bees are in the hive?

queen bee

Role: The only egg-laying individual in the nest, laying several thousand eggs a day. Important for maintaining nest size and health.

male bee

Role: Born mainly during the spring breeding season, their main role is to mate with the queen bee. If you see a large number of male bees in the nest, the queen may be in poor condition or may be dead.

worker bee

Role: Female and responsible for all tasks other than reproduction. Specific duties include nest construction and maintenance, food collection, larval care, nest cleaning, defense, and temperature regulation

This division of labor allows the bee hive to operate efficiently and maintain its overall health and function.

You can tell the difference between male and female eggs by observing the nest frame!

Hamamatsu Strawberry Picking|60 minutes all-you-can-eat! Enjoy spring with Kashima Harvest

The most representative fruit that signals the arrival of spring is strawberries, which turn bright red.

In particular, “strawberry picking” where you can stuff your mouth with freshly picked strawberries is a recommended activity in spring.

In fact, Shizuoka Prefecture is one of the leading strawberry producing areas in Japan. So this time, we visited Kashima Harvest, a recommended strawberry picking spot in Hamamatsu, for an interview.
