Yamazumi Shrine

  • Culture
Yamazumi Shrine is located on the Yamazumi Pass, which sits at an elevation of 1,107 meters. It has a long history of wolf worship. During the Battle of Mikatagahara in 1572, it is believed a battle-weary Tokugawa Ieyasu heard a pack of wolves howling. This saved Tokugawa because the startling sound drove his opponents away. In the shrine's garden, there are cedar trees that are 1,300 years old. From early summer, you can hear the cries of the Oriental Dollarbird.
