Atago Feels – Stay at a Renovated School

Atago Feels, renovated from the former Shimo-Atago Junior High School, has transformed the school building into a playful and imaginative lodging experience.

This time, we visited atago feels, located in Kamino, Tenryu Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

Atago Feels, renovated from the former Shimo-Atago Junior High School, has transformed the school building into a playful and imaginative lodging experience.

Beyond the school grounds, a campsite awaits, where you can relax in nature with activities like camping, barbecues, and playing in the river!

We’re excited to introduce atago feels, a facility full of fun and surprises that will make you want to visit again and again!

What is atago feels?

Atago Feels is a multi-purpose facility created by Hamamatsu-based design firm Land Design Co., Ltd., transforming a former school into a unique and creative space.

You can fully enjoy the great outdoors in your own style—whether it’s a day camp, overnight camping, or staying in one of the guest rooms.

It’s a place where you can forget about time and simply relax as your heart desires.

On the first floor of the four-story reinforced concrete school building, you’ll find the Seseragi Marche, the front desk, dining hall, and a private bath.

The second floor features six guest rooms and a library, while the third floor has two more guest rooms.

Rooms ①–⑧ are guest rooms, and the ★ on the first floor indicates the front desk.

The symbol “ゆ” represents the bathroom.

In addition to the guest rooms, the third floor also features a photo studio and rental offices.

To Create a Place Where People Can Feel the Richness of Nature

Through his work in children’s education, representative Mr. Yoichi Kono felt that not only adults weary from digital life but also children have few opportunities to play freely in nature.

With this thought in mind, he applied for the city’s public proposal project.

His proposal was accepted, and he went on to renovate the closed junior high school into a place where people can connect with nature.

“I wanted to create a place where children can feel the richness of nature and play freely, and where adults can step away from their daily routines to reset both mind and body,” says Kono.

Atago Feels officially opened on June 30, 2025, as a hub where people, things, and experiences come together.

Don’t miss the thoughtfully designed interior!

As you’d expect from a facility created by a design firm, atago feels features an interior full of carefully considered details.

In the dining hall, each chair is a handpicked antique with its own unique character—some of them are even more than 100 years old.

The floors are made from Yakusugi cedar, a thinned wood from Yakushima, bringing out the warmth and dynamic beauty of natural timber.

In the hallway, the randomly arranged Yakusugi beams blend perfectly with the cool, industrial steel framework, creating a striking balance of textures.

The guest rooms on the second and third floors retain original features such as blackboards and historical timelines from the school days, creating a comfortable harmony between the old and the new.

At the front desk on the first floor, you’ll find beautiful bamboo work crafted from locally sourced Tenryu-Atago bamboo.

The intricate design, carefully handwoven by local artisans, catches the eye and creates a warm, inviting space surrounded by wood and greenery.

Accommodation | Classrooms Transformed into Guest Rooms

Each of the eight guest rooms at atago feels has its own unique name.

All of the rooms are named using Japanese onomatopoeia, giving each one a playful and distinctive character.

From the top left: Zawazawa, Nico, Mokumoku, and Dokidoki.

From the bottom left: Sarasara, Wakuwaku, Gorogoro, and Waiwai.

For more details about the rooms, please visit the official website: https://atago-feels.com/facility

The guest rooms, converted from former classrooms, still feature original items such as blackboards, clocks, and bulletin boards, preserving the nostalgic atmosphere of the old school.

This time, we’ll introduce three rooms specially selected by the staff!

① Dokidoki (up to 5 people)

Dokidoki is a guest room renovated from the former principal’s office.

The former principal’s office still carries that familiar sense of tension we all felt as children when stepping inside.

That very feeling inspired the room’s name, “Dokidoki.”

The room features a harmonious blend of the rich warmth of hinoki wood, antique furniture, and a raised floor made of deep maroon-colored paulownia wood.

Some original artwork from the school days still adorns the walls, offering a unique experience of “staying in the principal’s office.”

② Sarasara (up to 5 people)

Sarasara is a guest room converted from the former teachers’ room, transformed into a quiet and refined space for a relaxing stay.

From the window, you can hear the gentle murmur of the Atago River flowing by, offering a soothing stay that relaxes both body and mind.

A cozy space where natural materials and nostalgia come together.

Lattice-patterned walls, a brown paulownia wood floor, and nostalgic school desks and chairs create a warm, sunlit atmosphere.

Enjoy a moment away from your daily routine with a cup of carefully brewed coffee in a handcrafted mug, and take the time to truly unwind.

③ Gorogoro (up to 10 people)

A relaxing space where you can simply unwind and enjoy “goro-goro time” in a former classroom.

It’s the perfect place to experience the joy of doing nothing.

The blackboard and historical timeline displays remain just as they were in the old school days.

Like a secret hideout from a picture book, Gorogoro features three interconnected wooden capsule boxes, creating a cozy and private space for guests to relax in.

It can accommodate up to eight people in the capsule beds, or up to ten when using the sofa bed.

Why not share a fun and exciting stay with your friends or family?

Surrounded by the scent of the trees and the gentle murmur of the river, you can enjoy a luxurious camping experience on a site covered with bamboo chips from Atago.

It’s a place where both adults and children can freely enjoy nature with all five senses—whether it’s a barbecue, a day camp, or an overnight stay under the starry sky.

“We also hope that visitors will enjoy discovering their own ways to play,” says Mr. Kono.

In the future, a treehouse is planned where guests can stay while listening to the gentle flow of the river—something to look forward to once it’s completed!

Along the Atago River, there are eight sections for day camping and ten sites available for overnight camping.

Atago Feels — An experiential lodging facility where nature, learning, and play come together

From the hotel windows, gentle views stretch all the way to the foot of the mountains, while at the campsite, the rustle of the cedar trees and the gentle murmur of the river reach your ears.

Children are drawn into nature, playing freely, while adults can relax by gazing at the sky or following the enticing aroma of delicious food.

It’s a place where you can spend time following the rhythm of your own heart.

Through play, children learn about life, and adults reconnect with themselves.

True enjoyment comes from each visitor discovering their own moments—appreciating beauty, savoring delicious flavors, soaking in the tranquility, and creating personal discoveries along the way.

Step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and fully immerse yourself in the nature before you—children and adults alike.

We hope you can enjoy the relaxing pace of time at Atago Feels.

We quietly prepare a rich and fulfilling day for you, ready to welcome you whenever you visit.

This time, we introduced atago feels, a multi-purpose facility renovated from a former school.

Our visit took place in mid-October, and throughout the building, you could see handmade Halloween decorations by the staff, giving a wonderful sense of the season.

At Atago Feels, you can enjoy a wide variety of hands-on experiences that let you play, learn, and connect with nature.

Workshops are actively offered, including pottery, woodworking, bamboo crafts, and storytime sessions for adults.

In summer, you can even try SUP on the Atago River.

Atago Feels also welcomes group use, such as sports camps, field trips, or reunions.

Why not create new “special memories” once again at this former school?
