This time, we visited Hamanako Garden Park, located in Murakushi-cho, Chuo Ward, Hamamatsu City.

Hamanako Garden Park, which once hosted the Flower Expo, is a place where you can enjoy the beauty of gardens throughout the year.

And the best part?

Admission is free!

Spanning 56 hectares (about the size of 12 Tokyo Domes), the park offers plenty of space to stroll and admire seasonal flowers at a leisurely pace.

Most areas of the park welcome dogs, making it a popular destination for pet lovers as well.

What is Hamanako Garden Park like?

Hamanako Garden Park was created following the 2004 Hamanako Flower Expo.

The “Flower Museum”, which recreates the garden of Claude Monet—a French Impressionist painter who was also an exceptional gardener—drew a lot of attention, as did the world’s first “Blue Rose”, attracting a remarkable 5.44 million visitors.

As of 2025, Hamanako Garden Park continues to serve as a city park where locals can relax, set amid the beautiful nature and open landscapes of Lake Hamana.

The park is known for its observation deck overlooking the lake, seasonal flower fields, and gardens inspired by Monet’s famous garden.

With events and hands-on workshops held throughout the year, there’s always something new to enjoy, no matter how many times you visit.

Hamanako Garden Park Highlights Guide

Hamanako Garden Park covers a vast 56 hectares, but with rental bicycles or the sightseeing boat “Garden Cruise”, you can tour the park in about 1–2 hours.

This time, we took a leisurely walk around the park and were able to complete a full loop in about two and a half hours.

Highlight ①: Enjoy Seasonal Flowers at Hana Hiroba

Located not far from the parking lot, the expansive 3,000 m² “Hana Hiroba” near the outdoor stage is filled with seasonal flowers, creating a colorful and vibrant space to explore.

On the day of our visit, the cosmos were in full bloom.

On the day of our visit, many people were busy snapping photos in the flower fields.

The official Hamanako Garden Park website always provides up-to-date flower blooming information, so it’s a good idea to check when the flowers are at their best before your visit.

Highlight ②: “Flower Museum” – Like a Scene from a Western Painting

On the west side of Hamanako Garden Park is the Flower Museum, a space that recreates the beautiful garden Claude Monet designed at his home.

Surrounding the pale pink building, the garden is designed around two concepts—“Flower Garden” and “Water Garden”—just like Monet’s garden in Giverny, France.

The highlight of the Flower Garden is its seasonal blooms.

Centered around a large rose arch, the garden features carefully arranged flowerbeds.

From April to May, tulips, wisteria, and roses fill the space with color, making it beautiful in every season.

In the Water Garden, water lilies bloom from spring to summer, evoking Monet’s famous “Water Lilies” paintings.

From the bridge over the Water Garden, you can lose track of time as you gaze at the lily-filled pond.

On the day of our visit, cosmos and dahlias were in bloom, offering a refreshing glimpse of the garden’s autumn beauty.

Highlight ③: 50m-High Observation Tower with 360° Views of Lake Hamana

Located near Hana Hiroba and the event area, the 50-meter observation tower offers stunning views.

Take the elevator to the top floor, and you can enjoy a panoramic view of Hamanako Garden Park as well as the surrounding Lake Hamana.

As soon as you step off the elevator to the observation floor, many visitors can’t help but exclaim, “Wow!”

On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Southern Alps, Mount Fuji, and the Imagireguchi, where Lake Hamana meets the Pacific Ocean.

Admission to the observation tower is ¥300 per person for high school students and older (including tax, as of November 2025).

In April and May, the tower is open until 5:00 PM, and during the other months until 4:30 PM.

The observation deck is open-air, so be mindful of rainy days when planning your visit.

Highlight ④: Enjoy a Relaxing Ride on the Garden Cruise

The Flower Museum is located at the far end of Hamanako Garden Park from the entrance.

Since it’s more than 1 km from the parking lot, we recommend using the sightseeing boat “Garden Cruise”, which docks right in front of the Flower Museum.

The Garden Cruise costs ¥700 one way (¥1,200 round trip) for adults and ¥350 one way (¥600 round trip) for children (as of November 2025).

There are two boarding points: one on the south side of the Experience Learning Center near the entrance, and the other on the south side of the Flower Museum.

From the boat, you can enjoy graceful views of the gardens from the water.

Facilities and Services at Hamanako Garden Park

・Restrooms, Nursing Rooms, and Rest Areas

The park has 11 restrooms, including well-maintained outdoor facilities.

A nursing room is available inside the Experience Learning Center.

There are more than 20 rest areas throughout the park, including four designated smoking areas, so you can relax comfortably during your visit.

・Accessibility

Wheelchairs and strollers can be rented for free at any of the park’s three information centers.

Senior mobility carts are also available for ¥500 at the Experience Learning Center Management Office.

All rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

・Shops, Cafés, and Restaurants

Near the South Information Center, by the Minami-Ebo Bridge, you’ll find the restaurant “Notane”.

There are also open-air cafés on the north side of the Green Plaza and in front of the Flower Museum.

One highlight is the Rose Soft Cream (¥450, tax included, as of November 2025), which fills your senses with a rich fragrance as if you were tasting a real Damask rose.

This time, we treated ourselves to the even more luxurious King Rose Soft Cream (¥550, tax included, as of November 2025).

It comes with Gallica rose jelly and rose hip jam, letting you enjoy three types of roses in one treat.

On weekends (except in winter), numerous food trucks also set up shop in the park.

Hamanako Garden Park Crowds

The park is generally not crowded on weekdays. However, weekends with large events can be very busy.

Every year, the park is crowded all day from May 3 to May 5 during Golden Week.

During major events, lines can even form up to the Hamanako Bridge just before the park.

While there is a ¥210 toll for regular cars (as of November 2025), taking the scenic Hamayuu Bridge allows you to reach the park more smoothly.

Access & Parking for Hamanako Garden Park

Hamanako Garden Park is about 30 minutes by car from the Hamamatsu Nishi IC and about 20 minutes from the Kanzanji Smart IC.

You can also reach the park directly by a no-transfer bus from Hamamatsu Station.

By Car
• About 30 minutes from the Hamamatsu Nishi IC on the Tomei Expressway
• About 20 minutes from the Kanzanji Smart IC on the Tomei Expressway
• About 15 minutes from the Arai Benten IC on the Hamana Bypass

The park has a spacious parking area with around 1,800 spaces, and parking is free of charge.

・North Parking Lot: approx. 380 spaces (including 16 accessible spaces)
・South Parking Lot: approx. 170 spaces (including 9 accessible spaces) + 15 bus spaces
・West Parking Lot: approx. 780 spaces
・Other areas: approx. 500 spaces

Parking spaces closest to the park entrances—the South and North Parking Lots—tend to fill up first. Once these are full, visitors are directed to the West Parking Lot.

By Public Transportation
From JR Hamamatsu Station, it takes about 60 minutes by bus.

How It Differs from Hamamatsu Flower Park

About a 12-minute drive north along Lake Hamana from Hamanako Garden Park, you’ll find Hamamatsu Flower Park.

Located in the popular sightseeing area of Kanzanji, the Flower Park is surrounded by other attractions such as Hamanako Palpal and the Hamamatsu Zoo.

The highlights of Hamamatsu Flower Park include its world-famous “Sakura & Tulip Garden,” beautiful wisteria trellises, greenhouses, fountain shows, and illumination events.

While Hamamatsu Flower Park has an admission fee that varies by season (starting from 500 yen per adult), Hamanako Garden Park is free year-round, and parking is also free.

If you’re planning to visit the zoo or the amusement park as well, Hamamatsu Flower Park is the convenient choice.

But if you want to spend a relaxing time surrounded by seasonal flowers, or you love gardening, Hamanako Garden Park is the perfect place for you.

From the fresh blooms glistening in the morning sun to the delicate petals glowing quietly in the evening light, you can fully enjoy the relay of flowers that continues from spring into early summer.
