Have you ever found yourself thinking, “I’m craving a delicious hamburg steak set meal today,” or “I’d love to relax in a cozy retro café with a cup of coffee and something sweet”?

You can enjoy both at Teishoku & Café Borudo, located in Tsunetake-cho, Chuo Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka.

Despite its stylish, modern café exterior, stepping inside reveals the warm charm of a traditional Japanese coffee shop. The inviting atmosphere makes it a place where even first-time visitors can instantly feel at home.

In this article, we’ll introduce Teishoku & Café Borudo, with a closer look at its must-try menu items.

What Is Teishoku & Café Borudo Like?

The story of Teishoku & Café Borudo began in 1974.

The restaurant originally started as a small eatery inside a business hotel in Oroshi Honmachi, Chuo Ward, Hamamatsu City.

At the time, it was a popular spot for hotel guests and office workers from the nearby wholesale district, many of whom stopped by every day.

Inspired by the desire to serve homemade meals that would satisfy every customer, the restaurant quickly gained a strong reputation and became a beloved local dining spot.

When the hotel closed during the COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020, the future of the restaurant was uncertain, and closing its doors was even considered.

However, the current owner decided to carry on its long-standing flavors for future generations. In January 2022, the restaurant relocated to its current location in Tsunetake-cho and reopened with a fresh new look.

Surrounded by peaceful countryside scenery, the new location continues to welcome longtime regulars while attracting plenty of first-time visitors as well.

In 2024, Teishoku & Café Borudo celebrated its 50th anniversary and continues to serve the same delicious homemade dishes that have been loved for generations.

Must-Try Menu Items at Teishoku & Café Borudo

From here, let’s take a closer look at some of the must-try dishes at Teishoku & Café Borudo.

Must-Try Menu Item #1: Hamburg Steak Set Meal

From 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., lunchtime at Teishoku & Café Borudo is always bustling with hungry diners.

The restaurant offers an extensive selection of around 16 to 18 set meals, all freshly prepared to order and served quickly. Among them, the most popular choice is the Hamburg Steak Set Meal.

The restaurant’s signature hamburg steak is juicy, tender, and perfectly fluffy, with just the right amount of richness without feeling too heavy.

The rich sauce perfectly complements the meat, bringing out its savory flavor even more.

Food blogs and online reviews have also praised the hamburg steak, describing it as “an outstanding classic demi-glace sauce,” “one of the best authentic hamburg steaks you can enjoy in a nostalgic Japanese café,” and “so delicious that you’ll want another bowl of rice.” It’s no surprise that people travel from afar just to enjoy this signature dish.

Every set meal comes with the main dish, rice, miso soup, Japanese pickles, and a daily rotating side dish.

You can also upgrade to a large serving of rice at no extra charge—a long-standing tradition that reflects the restaurant’s desire to make sure every guest leaves well satisfied.

With so many other set meals on the menu, choosing just one can be the hardest part.

There’s More to Enjoy Beyond the Hamburg Steak Set Meal

Other popular set meals include:

Fresh Horse Mackerel Fry Set Meal
Domestic Beef Sirloin Cutlet Set Meal
Stir-Fried Eggplant with Miso Set Meal
Chicken Nanban Set Meal
Minced Meat Cutlet Set Meal

…and many more!

The Stir-Fried Eggplant with Miso Set Meal is packed with flavor and pairs perfectly with rice.

The Fresh Horse Mackerel Fry Set Meal uses more than 200 grams of thick-cut horse mackerel that’s fresh enough to be enjoyed as sashimi.

The crispy coating gives way to remarkably light, fluffy, and juicy fish inside.

Because availability depends on the day’s catch, this special dish isn’t served every day—so if you spot it on the menu, don’t miss the chance to try it!

The Japanese Beef Sirloin Cutlet Set Meal is made with Japanese beef and served with a crispy coating, while the beef inside is cooked to a perfect medium-rare, leaving the center beautifully pink.

The tender texture and rich natural flavor of the beef make this another highly recommended set meal.

The chalkboard in the restaurant also features the day’s specials, so each visit offers the chance to discover something new and delicious.

Must-Try Menu Item #2: Borudo Pudding

From 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., it’s café hours at Teishoku & Café Borudo.

One of the most popular treats during café hours is the Borudo Pudding.

This pudding has been a menu favorite long before the recent retro café trend, making it a true classic Japanese coffee shop dessert.

It’s a firm pudding that offers a satisfying resistance when you take the first spoonful. Each bite is rich with the gentle flavor of eggs and milk.

The pudding is topped with a generous drizzle of house-made caramel sauce with a pleasantly bittersweet flavor.

The perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness makes every bite irresistible. On social media, it’s often praised as one of the best firm puddings in Hamamatsu.

You’ll also find other desserts on the menu, including panna cotta, coffee jelly, and a rotating selection of cakes.

The café also offers carefully crafted drinks, including nostalgic favorites like cream soda and coffee float, as well as its house-made ginger drink with a pleasantly spicy kick.

If you order a cake together with a drink, you’ll receive a special discount, making it the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy a relaxing café break.

Takeout Menu and Fresh Local Vegetables

At Teishoku & Café Borudo, you can also enjoy the restaurant’s flavors at home with its takeout menu. The café also sells fresh vegetables carefully grown by local farmers.

One of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, the Hamburg Steak, is available as a takeout bento.

Whether you’re enjoying it at home or at work, you can savor the taste of Borudo wherever you are.

A corner of the restaurant is also dedicated to seasonal vegetables delivered directly from local farmers.

Being able to browse ingredients carefully grown by local producers is one of the things that makes Teishoku & Café Borudo so special, reflecting its close connection with the local community and the people who grow its food.

With its nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional neighborhood shop, Borudo is a place where people naturally come together. After enjoying a delicious hamburg steak, many regulars like to pick up some fresh local vegetables before heading home.
