This time we visited Hamamatsu Flower Park, located in Kanzanji.

The park, about 6.4 times the size of Tokyo Dome, is filled with seasonal flowers where you can take a relaxing stroll while enjoying the blooms.

If walking feels a bit too much, we recommend hopping on the Flower Train that runs through the park.

You can enjoy the ride along with live commentary from the staff on board.

Now, let’s take a closer look!

What kind of place is Hamamatsu Flower Park?

Hamamatsu Flower Park is a botanical garden that was opened to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Hamamatsu City.

It first partially opened on September 10, 1970, and fully opened on July 1, 1971.

In 2025, the park celebrates its 55th year.

Opened with the aim of “deepening understanding of nature, providing a relaxing space for citizens, and serving as a place for youth education,” Hamamatsu Flower Park also contributes to the promotion of floriculture and supports tourism in connection with Lake Hamana and Kanzanji Onsen.

Hamamatsu Flower Park – A Guide to the Highlights

With plenty of restaurants and cafés, Hamamatsu Flower Park is a place where you can take your time and enjoy a leisurely stroll without worrying about the clock.

For exploring the spacious park, the Flower Train is also recommended.

Getting off at the Crystal Palace in the large greenhouse allows you to easily tour the rest of the park.

This time, we asked Ms. Yuko Muramatsu from the public relations team to share the highlights of Hamamatsu Flower Park.

Highlight ① Crystal Palace – The Large Greenhouse

The Crystal Palace, a large greenhouse, was renovated in 2003.

Photo courtesy of Hamamatsu Flower Park

It is said that the name Crystal Palace was inspired by the famous Crystal Palace from the 1851 London Great Exhibition.

It is made up of three sections: the Garden Theater, which hosts seasonal themed displays; the Bali Garden, filled with lush tropical plants; and the Mexican Garden, showcasing plants from arid regions.

Visitors can enjoy gardens and plants from around the world, along with seasonal events throughout the year.

As the wooden automatic doors at the entrance open, a bright and open world of plants unfolds, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into a completely different country!

The Garden Theater also features a charming open café.

Light snacks are available, but a must-try is the King Rose Soft Serve, made with plenty of rose extract!

The rose soft serve is served with homemade rose jelly and rose hip jam, and with each bite, your mouth fills with the rich, fragrant aroma of roses.

Another popular seasonal treat is the King Rose Frappe, available from March to around November.

Highlight ② Mosaiculture – “Forest Friends”

The mosaiculture display “Forest Friends” features seven animals, including a 7-meter-tall bear, as well as deer and tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog), all created in three dimensions using flowers and greenery.

Created to mark the 10th anniversary of the Hamamatsu Mosaiculture World Expo and the 50th anniversary of Hamamatsu Flower Park, it was completed on November 20, 2020.

The display features animals based on native Japanese species, and the piece is said to be complete when a person sits on the swing-style bench in the center, joining the “friends.”

Apparently, there’s a heart-shaped pattern on the bear’s backside—be sure to look for it!

A camera stand is set up in front of the mosaiculture display, so you can use the self-timer to take a photo while sitting on the swing-style bench.

Capture yourself surrounded by the flower-crafted bear and deer for a memorable shot.

Highlight ③ Library Train

The Library Train is made by repurposing retired Flower Train carriages, transforming the interior into a cozy, library-style space.

Photo courtesy of Hamamatsu Flower Park

Inside, you’ll find picture books and books about plants.

Children can enjoy reading inside the carriage, while adults can read on the benches at the scenic Hill of Views.

Books cannot be taken out, so please return them to the shelves when you leave.

Highlight ④ Fountain Show

Boasting the largest fountain pond in the Tokai region, the fountain show was renewed in 2020!

Photo courtesy of Hamamatsu Flower Park

You can enjoy a dazzling fountain show set to four songs, including three composed and arranged by Hamamatsu native Ms. Toyono Suzuki.

The fountain show, lasting about six minutes, takes place at 00 and 30 minutes each hour.

It’s lovely to watch from the elevated area where the Flower Train passes, but we also recommend going down the stairs to see it up close.

You can enjoy the sparkling water droplets glistening in the sunlight.

Seasonal Events at Hamamatsu Flower Park

Hamamatsu Flower Park is packed with seasonal events throughout the year.

We asked Ms. Yuko Muramatsu from the park’s public relations team about some of the main highlights.

The green lawns, combined with the beauty of the flowers, create an even more serene spring landscape.

A Message from Ms. Yuko Muramatsu, Public Relations, Hamamatsu Flower Park

The park is quite spacious, so even during busy times, once you step inside, you can enjoy a surprisingly relaxed stroll.

The main attraction is the Somei Yoshino cherry trees, which bloom from late March to early April.

The peak bloom lasts only about a week, but the sight of pale pink cherry blossoms overhead, lush green lawns underfoot, and colorful tulips in full display is truly a scene you won’t want to miss.

Additionally, from mid-April through Golden Week, the purple wisteria reaches its peak bloom.

Starting from Golden Week, 1,300 rose plants of 300 varieties greet visitors with their fragrant blossoms.

We hope you visit again and again to enjoy the continuous relay of blooms.

It brings us the greatest joy to know that the power of the plants helps wash away your daily fatigue and leaves you feeling refreshed.
